11 years ago on August 13th, 2007 our baby boy Tyse was born. Our lives should have been so happy and exciting with our new baby boy. Instead, we were terrified of the furture for our baby. We were faced with a baby who had a heart defect - Transposition of the Greater Arteries that required open heart surgery at one week old at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
I will never forget the day before Tyse's surgery the NICU Neonatologist came in to see us and he asked me if I was ready for Tyse's surgery . I broke down into tears and told him I was so scared and didn't know how I could hand my baby over for 12 hours of surgery. I was so afraid I would never be able to hold him alive again, I didn't want him to have to go through this surgery. The Neonatologist was soft spoken and so empathetic and his words are with me still to this day. He said, "Kris, this surgery will give Tyse his life, it's the only way he can live and survive." For some reason, I was so 'stuck' on losing him during the heart surgery I didn't realize it was the only way he could live. He gave me courage and strength knowing there was no other choice. I wanted my baby to live. It was the longest and hardest day of our lives. I could barely breathe for 12 hours.
This picture was our first sight of Tyse after his heart surgery. My heart breaks every time I look at it. It takes me right back to those days, the smells, the fear. No baby should have that many tubes and IV's stuck to them. It's just not right! No parent should have to sit by their babies side day and night and pray for miracles. It's just not fair!
WE NEED TO STOP THIS!!!
Team Tyse is doing everything we can to stop this horrible birth defect. Please help us fight for these kids and families and stop heart defects with research that will help change the future. Please consider making a donation to the Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin through the Al's Run. 100% of donations go directly to the research and care of kids with heart defects. We can all make a difference whether we walk together or donate together.
As difficult as those 7 weeks were in the hospital for all of us, I am forever grateful for all of Tyse's nurses, doctors, surgeons, speech therapists, etc.. Their unwavering support and comfort helped us so much. Our healthy, sassy, constantly dancing, always challenging 11-year-old boy is so full of life and love. It's hard to describe our full hearts for the gift of Tyse's life.
This is the 11th year for TEAM TYSE. We have raised over $35,000 for the research and cure of children's Heart defects. All because of our little babies heart. It is so amazing!
We can't say Thank you enough for all your love, encouragement and support for the last 11 years. You give us the strength to keep this amazing Team Tyse journey going. Let's Rock it this year!!
